In partnership with Narel and Alison Atkinson, we held a Health & Nutrition workshop at the HelpKids Centre in Colombo for children and parents. The session was conducted by our Community Medical Officers and the division’s Child Development Officer. Using videos, demonstrations, and songs, children and parents learned about healthy eating habits and basic nutrition guidelines. For breakfast, parents prepared two nutritious local dishes: Kurakkan Kande (Finger Millet Porridge), which is gluten-free and rich in fiber, calcium, and iron; and Vegetable Pittu, made with rice flour, coconut, and vegetables. Everyone enjoyed sharing the healthy meal together. Parents were also guided on topics such as children’s overall health, reducing screen time, preparing balanced meals at home, and maintaining good oral hygiene. Each child was seen by the medical team, who assessed their health and gave individual advice. Parents were encouraged to continue development checks at their local clinics. This was a valuable learning opportunity for families. The feedback from parents was very positive, and many expressed a desire for more future programs.
